Dog urinary tract infections are caused by bacteria in the urinary bladder, urethra (the pipe that carries the urine from the urinary bladder to the exterior) or kidney. In a dog, urinary infection symptoms make him wretched and can make the process of urination an agonizing ordeal. Dog urinary infection symptoms are easy to diagnose for a veterinary surgeon and with early treatment the infection will wane off completely within short time. But if it is left untreated, the disease may become fatal.

Dog urinary infection symptoms

The dog will demand to go outside frequently if you have given him proper toilet training. He may cry before you to take him for walking. The dog will feel difficulty in urination. There may be straining. The passed urine will have a fetid smell. In complex and advanced cases of dog urinary infection, symptoms of blood dribbling out from the urethra can be seen. It causes tremendous burning sensation in the total urinary passage, so you may see the dog is licking his genitalia for quite a long time. They do it to ease out a bit. The dog may urinate in inapt places like bed, sofa, dinning table, kitchen etc. The agility of the dog will be compromised severely. He will become lethargic so much the he may refuse to take his choice of foods.

There may be tenderness in the lower part of abdomen for a long standing case of dog urinary infection. Symptom of fever is also seen in those dogs. The moisture over the nose will not be palpable. This is a common but often unnoticed sign of animal fever.

In advanced cases of dog urinary infection, symptoms of kidney involvement can also be seen.

Treatment of dog urinary infection
The earlier the treatment begins; the better is for the dog. There is no point waiting as you notice any dog urinary infection symptom. Offer him plenty of water and other fluid. It is healthier to add some Vitamin C with the water as Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and any other citrus fruit is beneficial in a case of urinary tract infection. You must take the dog outside for walking for more number of times. As he urinates, he will feel better and the bacteria will be washed out. Do not give any food of animal origin for at least five days as nitrogen content in these foods will hamper the healing process. Any medicine should be given after a consultation with the vet.

Just like you nurture your child, you have to take care of your pet dog. Not only the diet and water, but you have to look after their health and vitality as well. Basically a pet dog is totally dependent upon you in every aspect of their life. For the purpose of health care, you need to have some basic knowledge about the common diseases of the dog can suffer; dog urinary infection is one of them.
Just like any other case, bacteria accumulate in the urinary tract of the dog from outside. And if this is not washed out through urination, they culminate into the urinary system and the full fledged infection shows up.

Symptoms

First you will see the irritable behavior of the dog. They will ask you to go outside more frequently than usual. The urination becomes troublesome and the dog can cry during the process. There will be less amount of urine and the frequency will surely be increased. The urine becomes foul smelling. As the infected urine makes the urinary passage inflamed, there is burning sensation during the process and the dog will lick their genitalia after urination for quite some time. They do it to get some respite.
In advanced cases, where the kidneys have become diseased, there may be dribbling of blood from the urethra.

What to do in a case of dog urinary infection

The dog needs some comfortable atmosphere. If possible, make an arrangement in the yard of you house, so that he can urinate whenever he feels so. Offer him plenty of water mixed with citrus drinks like lemon, Vitamin C powder. Avoid synthetic diet and meat for few days as the nitrogen content of these foods is high, which may hamper the healing process.

Take him for frequent walking so as to ease up the dog. The more he urinates, the better as every process of urination washes some amount of bacteria from the body.

If there is no relief from the symptom even after two days, you have to take the dog to a vet to treat the case of dog urinary infection. Firstly, the vet will send the urine specimen for culture of the bacteria. This will give the vet full control to the best antibiotic that may be prescribed. Do not give any kind of antibiotic without consulting the veterinary surgeon as it may jeopardize the life of the dog.

How to prevent dog urinary infection
•	Encourage the dog to take plenty of water daily.
•	Bathe your dog in regular basis.
•	Help the dog to release the energy by playing with them and taking them for regular walk.

If your dog is asking to go out frequently as urinates often, he might be suffering from urinary tract infection. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common disorder for your pet dog. It is as much common as human being and generally caused due to infection of different bacteria, usually gram-negative bacteria. It is a very much irritable condition for the dog he can not hold the urine for too long.

How do you know your dog is suffering from UTI

If you usually take your dog for walking and he cries before you to go out, be careful, he may be suffering from dog urinary tract infection. He will pass urine for smaller volume than usual and the frequency will be increased. Urine will have a bad smell. Female dogs suffer from UTI more often than the male dogs as the length of the urethra (urinary pipe) is shorter. Therefore, bacteria can flow upwards more easily than male dogs. The dog will cry during the process of urination in advanced cases of urinary tract infection. After urination, they will lick the genitals for quite some time to get some relief from the burning sensation.

What may be the complication?

Dog urinary tract infection can become fatal if the infection ascends to the kidney and the ureter (connecting pipe from the kidney to the urinary bladder). Kidney infection may lead to premature death.

What can be done in case of dog urinary tract infection?

The first and foremost thing is to take the pet to a qualified veterinary surgeon. If this is not possible, allow the dog to drink fluid as much as he can. Take the dog for walking more frequently for at least five days. It is very much important; if you can not do those, ask somebody to do so. As the dog urinates, he will ease up because with each frequency, some bacteria will be washed out from the body.

Medicines are to be ideally given under supervision from a vet. Still, if you can not manage to visit a vet, give the dog a combination dose of Ciprofloxacin (5 mg per Kg of body weight) and Tinidazole (2.5 mg per Kg of body weight). The medicines should be given twice daily for five to seven days. In resistant long standing cases, the dog may require intramuscular injection of Third generation cephalosporin (cefotaxim/ ceftriaxone).

The most important thing is that you have to make the dog comfortable.

When you see your loving dog is too much irritable to go outside, you can make an assumption that he may be suffering from infection in the urinary tract.

Urinary tract infection is quite common in dogs due to lack of hygiene. Dog urinary tract infection symptoms are easy to find but difficult to treat as it can spread very fast. You need to be extra cautious to discover them early. Male dogs are somewhat less sufferer from urinary tract infection than female as the male urethra is few inches longer than the female urethra. Therefore, infection can not ascend easily.
Common dog urinary tract infection symptoms

If you are the master of the dog and usually take him outside for walking, the dog will ask you frequently for going out. The frequency of urination will be increased for four to six times than the normal rate. The urine will have a foul smell. The volume will be reduced. The dog may urinate in appropriate places like indoors, sofa, beds, kitchen etc. You will see that urine is dribbling from the urethra even after the dog finishes the urination. In some advanced cases of dog urinary tract infection, symptoms of blood coming out from genitalia can be noticed. The dog will cry at the time of urination as he feels burning sensation over the whole urinary passage. He will lick the genitalia for quite some time to get rid out of pain He may cry if you touch the abdomen. This especially is advanced cases of dog urinary tract infection symptoms. The dog will become fatigued and lethargic so much that he may refuse to take food.
He may have fever. The best symptom to recognize the fever is to feel the nose. If it is not moist, the dog is probably suffering from fever.

What to do in case you see any symptom of dog urinary tract infection

Do not waste time; take your dog to the nearest veterinary surgeon immediately as you see any dog urinary tract infection symptoms. Take him for frequent walking. With each frequency, some amount of bacteria will be cleared from the urinary bladder and the dog will feel comfortable. Add some citrus food like lemon to his diet. Lemon contains Vitamin C which is a good drug in a case of urinary tract infection. Medication has to given under strict medical supervision.

If you are seeing your dog is irritated, needs frequent outing and the frequency of urination is increased four to six times than the normal rate, you can be sure that the dog is suffering from urinary tract infection. It is very much irritating condition for the dog and if this is not arrested early, the disease may become fatal.
Although, each and every dog can be a victim of urinary tract infection, female dogs suffer from the disease more due to their shorter length of urethra. Therefore, bacteria can easily ascend from outside to the urinary tract. The urethra and the urinary bladder get affected early and in advanced cases, ureter (the pipe that connects the kidney with the urinary bladder) and kidney may become diseased.
The symptoms of dog urinary tract infection

The dog needs frequent urination. There may be straining and difficulty in urination. Urination in unsuitable places is also noticed. In long standing cases, there may be dribbling of blood from the urethra. Urine will be foul smelling and the dog will lick the genitalia to get some relief from the burning sensation.
Herbal cure for dog urinary infection

Both the modern system of medicine and the traditional herbal medicine can cure the urinary infection in a dog. Herbal cure for dog urinary infection is superior as it targets not only the urinary tract infection, but the immunity of the dog in enhanced which may prevent future infections. Any disproportion in the body elements is also taken care of in the herbal cure for dog urinary infection, so bacteria fail to thrive in the system.
There are several herbal medicines for dog urinary infection in practice. Let us discuss about them.

Goldenrod: this is a potent stimulator of the anti-inflammatory function. The symptoms of pain and burning sensation are reduced greatly.
Corn silk: it is a natural alkalizing agent. In dog urinary infection, the urine becomes acidic in nature. Corn silk tincture helps to dealkalize the system and the chemical property of urine become normal.
Horsetail: in Chinese system of traditional medicine, use of horsetail as an antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agent has been in practice since a long time. Horsetail ash is used with other tincture or prescribed with water.
Juniper berry: this again has an anti-inflammatory effect, especially in the urinary system.
Pipsissewa leaf: potent stimulator of immune system.

These drugs can be prescribed singly or a tincture can be prepared from all the ingredients.
